University Maths Notes: Topology – Orientable And Non Orientable Surfaces – An Introduction



A surface is orientable if when it is cut up and folded out the ends can be matched up without having to turn the ends over – or precisely, without having to turn them over an odd number of times. The Mobius band is non orientable, since the ends are folded only once, but the real projective plane, at the bottom is orientable since there are two folding overs.
